Just as gummy bears stick into the grooves of your child’s teeth and can cause cavities; gummy vitamins also stick into your child’s teeth. Even with the best brushing, sometimes the toothbrush bristles literally cannot get to the bottom of the deepest grooves of the back teeth. Therefore, any sticky sugar particles can stick there and potentially cause cavities. Gummy vitamins are a newer item on the grocery shelf. Try switching your child to a traditional chewable tablet. For example the original Flintstone vitamin is recommended for children age two years and up. Before age two years we would suggest speaking with your children’s pediatrician or pediatric dentist about a liquid vitamin. For more information on making a better vitamin selection please ask us at your child’s next dental visit or call World of smiles Pediatric Dentistry at (503) 626-9700.
