How often should I take my child to the dentist?

A child needs to see their dentist at least every six months just like adults. At these appointments we will do an exam, cleaning, x-rays if necessary and a fluoride treatment. Due to the small size and vulnerability of primary teeth, a child that waits an entire year between visits may end up with large cavities or even an abscess. Any sign of early lesions may require more frequent visits as your child’s dentist may recommend fluoride varnish. The fluoride varnish is placed on the child’s teeth every 3 months to try and help with re-mineralization of the decalcifying tooth structure. Be sure to talk with your child’s dentist to set up a plan for your child’s oral care.
