Importance of prevention

Preventing childhood caries and illness can be done through the proper information around overall health. The food that we consume affects not only our mind but our body as well. Your child’s mouth is the first place that food goes. This is why education about what we consume and even when is extremely important. It has been stated on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that “Students miss more than 51 million school hours per year because of dental problems or related conditions.”

Dental pain can distract students, cause their schoolwork to suffer or even lead to school absences. A dental issue can do more than just cause a tooth ache. An untreated dental infection can affect the rest of the child’s body; in some situations if the infection is not treated the child may have to be hospitalized.

Dental decay can be prevented through diet counseling and proper hygiene. Knowing the proper foods for your child to eat and snack on is very important. Eating foods like cheese, crackers, fruit and veggies are good for not only a growing body and mind but for our teeth too. Drinking water and plain white milk is the best for our bodies and teeth. Water helps to keep our mouths moist and prevent food buildup and sticking to turn into a cavity. Milk is good for our bones and helps keep our bodies strong.

Being sure to brush at least two times a day and flossing one time a day (once your child’s teeth start touching) is extremely important to their overall health. Not only does it provide better smelling breath it keeps our mouths clean and healthy from bacteria and left over food particles. For more information please feel free to schedule an appointment at our office. We would love to meet you and your child and answer all your questions.
