Top 10 Things Your Kids Don’t Know About!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

When I was teaching third grade a few years ago, many of my students were fascinated by these strange plastic rectangles that I brought into class one day. Coming in different shades of clear, black, and white, some of these 8-year olds had never used a cassette player before. Listening to stories on tape through huge earphones (remember those lovely plastic and foam rubber devices in orange, brown, and tan?) was a novelty that made me feel much older than my 28 years. In a world of DVDs and CDs, now made almost obselete by OnDemand movies and free sites like Hulu.com, there are always experiences and technologies from yesteryear that never fail to bring back poignant memories.

Time recently published an article listing the Top 10 Things Today’s Kids Will Never Experience. Here are some of their offerings, along with a few of our own.

  • Camera Film (a young man 4 years of age asked me yesterday what the scrolling dial was for on the back of a film camera!)
  • Landline Phones
  • Real Books (heralding the age of the Kindle)
  • Being Lost
  • Music Videos on MTV (you mean, Music Television was supposed to have MUSIC on it?)
  • Walkmans
  • The Glory Days of Nick at Nite
  • Tan M&Ms
  • Czechoslovakia
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Terminator (Did our parents and grandparents feel the same way about Ronald Reagan?)

In our practice, over half of our patients are under the age of 6. Which means that by the time they are teenagers things like tweeting and texting may be obselete. Or maybe even credit cards, with the advent of phones that incorporate the ability to act as a virtual debit card. Even in the dental world, there is the continual advent of new technology. Our children have the benefit of offices like World of Smiles, Pediatric Dentistry that strive to maintain eco-friendly practices; utilizing technology to keep electronic chart notes, digital x-rays, and BPA & Mercury-Free products. Flouride doesn’t have to go into those oversize dental trays, but can be applied directly to a child’s teeth with a small paintbrush or cotton roll.

Your Turn…

What memories from your childhood will your family miss out on, or will you ensure that they grow up having some of those same nostalgic experiences?
