Pregnancy and Oral Health

Pregnancy and Oral Health

Your overall health can directly affect your pregnancy. During the time of your pregnancy your hormone levels rise. The rise in these hormones can contribute to gingivitis and advancing of tooth decay. In studies it has been shown that serious gum disease could be playing a role in low birth weight and even premature babies. Mothers that have active cavities or gum disease (gingivitis) will transmit those bacteria to their infants. This can lead to early childhood caries. This is why it is very important to see your dentist for regular cleanings when you are pregnant or planning to start a family. Make sure you get you and your baby off to a healthy and happy start!
